Common/Uncommon? - Tom Hanks and his stories

     Kiedy po raz pierwszy usłyszałam o nowym zbiorze siedemnastu opowiadań Toma Hanksa, chciałam dostać go i przeczytać jak najszybciej. Tom jest znanym i szanowanym aktorem, scenarzystą, reżyserem i producentem—człowiek Hollywoodu. Dotarcie do jego dzieła było dla mnie koniecznością.

     Po przejściu przez pewną część pierwszego opowiadania „Kolekcji nietypowych zdarzeń” poczułam się zagubiona i miałam wrażenie, że czegoś brakuje. Narracja zaczęła nużyć, czekałam jednak na zakończenie, mając nadzieję, że zszokuje. Opowiadania są dla mnie kategorią literatury, która ostatecznie powinna wywierać wpływ, zmieniać światopogląd i podejście do pewnych problemów, czy zjawisk. Nie mogłam tego znaleźć. W tym opowiadaniu bohaterem jest mężczyzna, który spędza 3 tygodnie z Anną, swoją przyjaciółką. W jej życiu wszystko jej ułożone perfekcyjnie i każdy element pasuje jak w układance. Niestety, nasz bohater nie jest takim elementem. Po uświadomieniu sobie własnego niedopasowania rozstają się. Mądra decyzja, jednak niezbyt szokująca. Większość zakończeń tych opowiadań jest niejednoznaczna, pomimo że narracja prowadzi czytelnika za rękę przez większość tekstu.

     Różnorodność uzytych technik narracyjnych i stylów jest jednocześnie wadą i zaletą tego zbioru. Jest dziennik, pierwszo- i trzecioosobowa narracja, scenariusz czy artykuły w gazecie, przenoszenie się do przeszłości czy świata w przyszłości. Wielorakość narracji świadczy o głębokiej literackiej wiedzy autora i gwarantuje zainteresowanie i zaciekawienie. Jednocześnie sprawia jednak, że czytający czuje się jak na rollercoasterze. Brakuje stabilizacji czytelniczej, bliższego utożsamienia się z autorem czy bohaterami.

     Kolejnym trudnym do określenia aspektem książki jest różnorodność poruszonych problemów. Autor poprzez opowiadania opisuje wojnę, zdradę i rozwód, parcie na sławę czy brutalność prawdziwego świata. Te zagadnienia zawsze warto rozpatrywać na nowo i w niektórych opowiadań Hanksa widać inne, nowe podejście do takiej tematyki. Jednak nie wszystkie te opowiadania spełniły tą funkcję.

      Interesujący natomiast jest język, jakiego znany aktor używa. Poprzez żywe dialogi i używane zwroty nadał każdemu z bohaterów własny charakter i osobowość, pomimo że całościowej narracji brakuje rytmu i melodii, tak zwanej muzyki języka.

     Warto wspomnieć również o osobistym doświadczeniu pisarza. Sam wspomina, że w jego życiu wiele było ciężkich momentów co można wyczytać z jego książki, na przykład w opowiadaniu o chłopcu, którego rodzice się rozwiedli, tak jak w przypadku młodego aktora. Dostrzec można też jego doświadczenie zawodowe właśnie jako aktora i scenarzystę, szczególnie w opowiadaniu, które napisane jest w formie scenariusza. Daje to pogląd na to jak scenariusze mogą wyglądać. Inne z opowiadań podobne są fabułą do hollywodzkich filmów. Rzucające się w oczy także jest alter ego pisarza, Hank Fiset, którego artykuły o Nowym Jorku stanowią przerywnik w lekturze na złapanie oddechu podczas czytania. Występujący w każdym opowiadaniu w zbiorze motyw klasycznej maszyny do pisania może odzwierciedlać podejście autora do klasyków, do samego pisania i najnowszych technologii.

     Lektura ma swoje wady i zalety, dla mnie z przewagą tych pierwszych. Sławne nazwisko pisarza, zabawne i chwilowo poruszające momenty czy parę niebanalnych historii nie jest wystarczające by uznać ten zbiór za dzieło wybitne, szczególnie gdy poprzeczka była tak wysoko postawiona. Jest to raczej lektura na niedzielne popołudnia przy kawie czy odstresowanie po ciężkim dniu pracy.

  When I first heard about Tom Hanks publishing his collection of 17 short stories, I wanted to read it as soon as possible. He is a famous and respected actor, screenwriter, director and a producer. Basically—the man of Hollywood. Getting hold of his work was a must.

   After going through a part of the first story of Uncommon Type: Some Stories I got a little confused and felt that something was missing. The narrative started being tiresome, but I still wanted to know the ending, expecting my mind to be blown. For me, short story is a category of literature that is supposed to shock the reader, change his attitude towards a certain problem or a phenomenon. I couldn’t find that. That story (“Three Exhausting Weeks”) is about a guy who spends three weeks being in a relationship with his old friend, Anna. Everything in her life is scheduled perfectly and every piece of it fits like a puzzle. Unfortunately, our guy doesn’t fit as it turns out. After realising it, he gives up the relationship, and they both move on. Good choice, but it is not shocking. Most of the endings in the stories are quite ambiguous, even though the narration easily guides the reader through it.

     What is both an advantage and a minus of this collection is the variety of narrative techniques and styles. There is a diary, a journal, 3^rd and 1^st person narrator, a script, day schedules and articles.  Some of the stories rewinds to the past and some of them concerns the possibilities of the future technology. The multiplicity of narrations prove the author’s vast literary knowledge and it provides interest, although it also makes the reader feel like on a roller-coaster. There is no stabilisation of perception.

     Another elusive aspect of the book is the diversity of problems touched in the stories. The author introduce points of view about war, infidelity and divorce seen with a child’s eyes, expectations of a success or cruelty of the world. These are important matters to be mentioned and some of them do show a different approach to them, but most of them don’t change world views or shed a new light on the subjects.

    What is interesting is the language Hanks uses. He gives each of the character a different personality, its own identity and creates lively dialogues. However, sometimes the narration lacks music, rhythm and melody. Short sentences are usually well seen, though when used too much, the staccato of words becomes tiresome.

     Personal experience of the author is also worth mentioning. There were many dark moments in Mr Hanks’ life that are reflected on the pages of the book. What also can be seen, is his experience as an actor and a screenwriter. Especially in the story that is written in a form of a script, which makes an attractive example of how these may be written. Few of the stories also involve cinematic plots and images. The thing that also makes the collection more personal is Hank Fiset as alter ego of the author. His “Our Town today with Hank Fiset” articles are put between another stories and help to catch a breath while reading. What is more, the repeated theme of old typewriter present in every story may reflect Hanks’ attitude toward the classic.

   The lecture has its advantages and disadvantages, unfortunately with the dominance of the second. The famous name of the author, the pretty moments of short laughs with the characters and few nice plots aren’t enough for me, especially when I expected a lot more.
